KVH is excited to be welcoming new Chief Executive Stu Hutchings to the team on Monday.

Prior to taking up the new role Stu was a Group Manager for OSPRI, a partnership between primary industries and government to manage the NAIT and TBfree programmes. He has had experience as Acting Chief Executive there, aswell as at the Animal Health Board.

Stu comes to the kiwifruit industry experienced in management of biosecurity risks, developing research and innovation programmes, and working on a day-to-day basis with farmers and growers, alongside industry and government.

The focus for Stu once he’s in the hot seat next week is to get out and meet growers and industry people, and ensuring there is full representation for all kiwifruit growers (through KVH) to protect orchards and livelihoods from our most unwanted and destructive pests and pathogens.

Read more about Stu and the December announcement of his appointment in the KVH press release.

Happy New Year
11 January 2018

Whether you’re back in the thick of it or still on a well-earned break taking advantage of the warm weather, we hope you all had a merry Christmas and enjoyed spending time with friends and family over the holiday season.

The KVH office opened and returned to normal hours this week so please do get in touch if there is anything we can help with. The team have been out inspecting containers from Italy, and thankfully no stink bugs were found (read more about keeping this unwanted pest out). If anyone is importing containers from Europe, we’re happy to assist with inspection when devanning.

We look forward to working with you throughout the year to ensure our biosecurity system remains strong and we continue to keep damaging pests and diseases from reaching our orchards.

New Chief Executive announced
11 January 2018

KVH has announced the appointment of Stu Hutchings as new Chief Executive.

Stu takes over from current Chief Executive, Barry O’Neil, at the end of March.

When announcing the appointment KVH Board Chairman, Adrian Gault, said Stu will join the KVH team well qualified with a wealth of experience and knowledge in management of biosecurity risks, research and innovation, and working alongside those within industry as well as government partners.

Stu’s most recent management role at OSPRI (a partnership between primary industries and government to manage the NAIT and TBfree programmes) has included responsibility for establishing the framework for delivery of a new long-term pest and disease management plan and several innovative research projects.

Stu is looking forward to joining a committed and future-thinking organisation that has great support and backing from kiwifruit growers, who he sees as key to the success of the industry.

Liquidation of the KVH Foundation
14 December 2017

The proposed resolution to liquidate the KVH Foundation Incorporated was confirmed and passed at the Special General Meeting on Tuesday morning.

The liquidation completes the process of Kiwifruit Vine Health Incorporated and the KVH Foundation Incorporated moving to a single legal entity under the Government Industry Agreement (GIA) - Kiwifruit Vine Health Incorporated - that represents the kiwifruit industry.

From here, liquidators will be appointed to formally dissolve the Foundation and complete all associated necessary legal requirements.

Consultation process for biosecurity funding
30 November 2017

KVH has attended grower roadshows presenting a proposal for future funding of biosecurity activities.

Copies of the roadshow presentation, detailed background information, and helpful frequently asked questions and answers about the proposal, are available on the KVH website.  The questions and answers have been put together based on the queries that were raised at roadshow meetings.

KVH has been consulting with growers because the funding mechanisms of KVH were originally established for Psa and are now out of date based on the serious nature of the biosecurity risks we face and the need to be able to immediately respond in the event of an incursion as part of our commitment to working with government under Government Industry Agreements (GIA).

KVH members have already agreed to a biosecurity levy of 1 cent per tray in 2018.  But, 1 cent is the maximum rate of the current levy order and it will not be enough to fund the response costs of a serious incursion. The proposal to address this is to increase the ceiling of the levy to 5 cents a tray, so that the KVH Board (in consultation with industry) can activate the full levy to fund future incursions.

The proposal will next be presented to IAC on Friday 8 December.

Based on all the feedback received, KVH will then decide as to whether to formally request an increase to the Minister for Biosecurity, or not.

We welcome your feedback on the proposal, which can be emailed to KVH at info@kvh.org.nz or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us on 0800 665 825.

16 November 2017

KVH congratulates Board member Simon Cook on his recent Nuffield Scholarship award.

The Nuffield Scholarship is a prestigious award in the primary sector. It has been awarded to New Zealand agricultural leaders for more than 60 years and provides a 12-month scholarship programme with up to 20 weeks spent overseas, allowing participants to observe and learn about global agricultural practices.

Simon has been a Grower Director on the KVH Board since being elected at the August 2016 AGM and has governance roles with several other kiwifruit organisations including being a supply entity director, vice president of the Te Puke Fruit Growers Association, and a member of NZKGI’s executive committee.

KVH Board Chair Adrian Gault said that in the time Simon has been on the KVH Board he has demonstrated leadership and commitment to the kiwifruit industry, which will benefit further from the knowledge he gains through this award.
